Powell Family photographs.

Fifteen photographs document three generations of the Powell family. Elizabeth (Betsy) Hardman Powell (Mrs. Chapmon); her daughter Martha A.J. Powell and her husband, Dr. Fielding Travis Powell, a distant relative; and their children, Frank A. Powell Sr. (1857-1938) and Ella May Powell (1863-1955) are pictured. George T. Powell and Ned T. Powell are also represented. The daguerreotype mat of Dr. Chapmon Powell is stamped "Jeffers". Daguerreian George A. Jeffers is documented as working in the south during the 1850s. One daguerreotype plate is stamped "Scovill Mfg. Co.", post 1850. The carte-de-visite and cabinet cards were produced by C.W. Motes and the Kuhns studio both Atlanta based photographers.

Dr. Chapmon Powell (1798-1870) was one of the early pioneer settlers of the Atlanta region and founded a large and well-known family. He served as sheriff of DeKalb County from 15 February 1833 untill 10 January 1834 and was a member of the Georgia Legislature in 1836. Powell lived in a log cabin near present day Clairmont and North Decatur Road, where he conducted his medical practice.
